What is TOHOKU SMILE?
The first TOHOKU Smile was a musical event to gather the Tohoku community together and show that no matter what, and no matter where we were from, we would not despair. It demonstrated that together, as a world community, our joint support and effort was greater than any obstacle we faced–and with that strength, we were able help those in need. Smiling, we are working towards a great and happy future and we, the world of those that can, will not stop until we have placed a smile on every face of those affected by the terrible events of March 11th.
Why is help still needed in Japan?
Although it has been four months since the Great Tohoku Earthquake hit the north-eastern side of Japan, aid for those affected is just as urgent as ever, with over 90,000 still living in shelters and a staggering 90% of the population unemployed and unable to find work due to the destruction. Although rations have been provided for those living in shelters, this is often only two meals a day consisting of a bowl of miso soup, a small portion of rice, and side dish of pickled vegetables.
Aid given now will go directly towards helping provide those living in shelters with fresh fruits and vegetables, providing children who witnessed the loss of their loved ones with counseling, and help to send orphans with no parents or family to look after them to summer camps a safe distance away from the Daiichi Fukushima Nuclear plant.
Currently in the Tohoku region there are an estimated 3,000 children who have lost one or more of their parents living in 19 orphanages. In Japan this is an especially vulnerable population due to a cultural stigma associated with orphans. There is very little community support provided for these children under normal circumstances, and after the earthquake the vast majority of assistance has come from grassroots volunteer organizations.
Whether it is emotional support through counseling, healthy food, or a new classroom for children in need of a school, your support now will have a long lasting and positive effect on these peoples lives.
Current Progress:
- The first TOHOKU SMILE, held in Yamagata, raised over 235,000 Yen for those in need as a result of the disasters of March 11th. Click here to read more about this event!
